RAF Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with French warplanes in a combined operation on an underground arms cache in Syria used by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the UK Ministry of Defence.

The location, pinpointed through surveillance, was assessed as housing weapons and explosive materials, the statement said, and was located in mountainous terrain just north of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our aircraft used Paveway IV guided bombs to hit a several access tunnels down to the facility... initial indications indicate the strike was effective," the ministry announced.

There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the strike late on Saturday and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the MoD added.

The British jets were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

The Islamic State group - also known as the so-called Islamic State - enforced militant control over parts of both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This strike shows British leadership, and commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with our allies, to eliminate any resurgence of IS and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," UK Defence Secretary the minister said.

British military aircraft have conducted overwatch operations over Syria to "deter any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State following its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I must thank the personnel of our armed forces participating in this operation for their skill and their valour," the Defence Secretary added. "They were part of numerous British troops on duty over Christmas and New Year. This operation, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who endanger our way of life, demonstrates how British military are prepared to act, throughout the year, ensuring Britain's security within its borders and influential overseas."

During December, the American forces executed what it described as a "major assault" against IS targets in the country, following an ambush resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The U.N. says IS still maintains an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 fighters in Iraq and Syria.
