The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the US against five Europeans involved in fighting online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’
European leaders including the French president charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans targeted figures who have been at the heart of efforts to introduce legislation regulating American tech companies.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in criticizing the move.
The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation
This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders argue the rules are necessary to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.
This row risks becoming a facet of a far wider existing political and ideological clash involving Washington and Europe.
