Pat Cummins Expected to Feature a Key Part in Ashes Series

Australian cricket captain

The pace bowler has claimed over 300 dismissals in 71 Test matches with an average of 22.10.

The Australian chair of selectors George Bailey has stated that skipper Cummins will have a crucial role in this winter's England-Australia contest.

Speculation had been growing that Cummins might miss the series due to a ongoing back issue that remained unresolved.

Earlier indications from the Australian camp suggested no official announcement had been made regarding whether he would play, with the extended contest scheduled to begin on 21 November in the WACA.

The selector shared that his recovery is on track and felt positive about the prospects of participating.

"We know that time is getting short and multiple considerations involved, not just the physical problem, but other factors as well," Bailey remarked.

"It's positive. We firmly believe that he'll participate in a major part. Ideally from the opening match. Should that not happen, we'll reassess."

Past Concerns

Cummins was ruled out the white-ball matches against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals last month after examinations confirmed a lumbar bone stress.

Previous incidents include of spinal problems, with flare-ups in several earlier campaigns causing him to miss multiple domestic campaigns in a short span.

He emphasized he would be proactive in his approach in his comeback strategy to ensure his availability for the Ashes.

He mentioned that there was no confirmation if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his rehabilitation but admitted it was "getting tight" for him to regain fitness for the first Test.

Alternative Arrangements

If he's unavailable, ex-skipper Smith will assume leadership.

All-rounder Cameron Green was recently pulled out from the ODI lineup for their ODI contests against the Asian giants as a safety move because of soreness in his side.

The selector characterized it as a "slight concern and stated that he'll feature in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "ideally positioned to resume bowling."

"We put so much time has gone into creating the schedule for him to be available for the first Test as an dual-role player," the selector detailed.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the first two ODIs in any case. How he handles the willow in shorter formats, should it hinder progress for a short period, we opted to approach this more conservatively."
